If you are a reader of the zine, you know that I include a comic strip in each issue. The comic is usually what I struggle with the most just because it is a fairly new way of working for me. When I was in art school, I expressed interest in comics, but I was unable to focus a lot of time on them because they weren't considered 'fine art'.
I graduated earlier this year and have spent a lot of my newfound creative freedom diving into comics like I've always wanted. While I am still learning and experimenting with the medium, I'm happy with the progress that I have made so far.
Sequential Artists Workshop was a fairly recent find for me. Based in Gainesville, Florida, this nonprofit organization is all about comics.
You can create an account on their website and track your progress, share your work, or chat with other comic artists. There are several different topic and interest threads to choose from when posting your work or starting a conversation.
Resources are often shared in the topic and interest threads, but there are other free resources under the courses + resources page. Included here are a handful of free courses as well as a big list of resources for getting started with the comic basics.
I really love their Friday night comics workshops that are free and open for anyone to join. If you miss the meeting, they are all recorded and uploaded for future access. This can also be found in the courses + resources page. Each week they bring in a different artist to cover a different topic. Some previous workshops have covered drawing clothing, generating ideas, abstraction, animation, as well as a wealth of other topics.
If you are interested in making comics this is the resource for you. Every time I log in there is new and valuable content. I also really admire the organizations ability to make these resources so accessible. You can find their website here.
